Oakland Point project fills a gaping need

I am writing to support The Oakland Pointe project. I grew up in Toano, graduated from Walsingham Academy and am a landowner in Toano.

My family has lived for generations in James City County and the James City Chapel, a stone’s throw from this proposed development. It is the final resting place for my parents, grandparents and great-grandparents, among numerous other relatives. I have frequently visited our family farm during the past 35 years to care for my elderly parents and our properties.

My support for the Oakland project stems from my professional expertise as a doctor of economics, my personal experience on the need for affordable housing in James City County and my family’s legacy of having a deep affinity for the American worker.

Newport News Public Schools offers substitute teaching to furloughed employees

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — Newport News Public Schools is encouraging furloughed federal employees to become a substitute teacher.

The school district is hosting a ‘Federal Employee Substitute Teacher Job Fair’ on Wednesday, January 23 at 9 a.m. The event will only go until 11 a.m. at the NNPS Human Resources Office located at 12507 Warwick Boulevard in Newport News.

Applicants will have onsite interviews and on-the-spot job offers.

People are weighing in on the invite. Bobby and Rosemary Boone know how much the shutdown is affecting people around them.

“Some of us are blessed where it’s not affecting us but eventually it will affect everybody,” Bobby Boone said. “It’s a great idea NNPS is doing this."

Howard Hanna Real Estate Announces New Newport News Office

Howard Hanna Real Estate has announced a new Newport News, Va., office, moving to 724 Thimble Shoals Blvd. in City Center at Oyster Point. Sandy Yoder Wagner is the managing broker of the office. To celebrate the opening, a ceremony and open house will be held on October 24 at 4 p.m.
