2 seriously injured in Newport News crash

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Police are investigating after two have been seriously injured in a crash Saturday night.

At around 9:19 p.m., Newport News police and fire department officials responded to a single vehicle accident in the area of 78th Street and Chestnut Avenue.

Upon arrival, officers found a heavily damaged black sedan that had struck a tree.

The driver, a 30-year-old Newport News man, and a passenger, currently only identified as an adult male, both suffered severe injuries in the crash.

They were both taken to a local hospital. Police are not certain at this time if their injuries are life-threatening.

The investigation into the crash is ongoing, but officials say speed is believed to be a factor. There is no additional information at this time.

Student brought a knife to a Newport News middle school

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — A Newport News middle school student brought a knife to school on Wednesday.

Police said the 13-year-old student had brought a pocket knife to Mary Passage Middle School. The student never threatened anyone with the knife. The knife was seized by school staff.

Newport News Public Schools released the following statement about the incident:

"The middle school student showed the pocket knife to some other students by removing the lid of the box it was in. The pocket knife was never removed from the box. The student has been sanctioned in accordance to the Rights and Responsibilities Handbook, which states that possession of any size or shape of knife (blade 3 inches or longer) or other sharp devices results in a long-term suspension."

Proposed teachers pay raise stirs debate in Newport News budget meeting


NEWPORT NEWS, Va. (WAVY) — The City of Newport News held its first of two public hearings for its proposed 2020 operational budget on Tuesday night.

Many teachers and members of the community used the meeting to speak out about the funding for the school district. City manager Cynthia Rohlf recommended level funding for the district despite a 2% increase for the overall budget.

Earlier this year, the school board voted to ask council for $2.4 million more for funding that would allow them to give 2% raise to teachers and add other positions.

Rhonda Wagner, the president of the Newport News Education Association, says it felt like a slap in the face seeing the proposed budget.

Man falls out of truck with furniture in Newport News, dies from injuries

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — On Sunday, March 17 at 10:52 a.m., Newport News police were sent to the intersection of Warwick Boulevard and Woodhaven Road for an accident with injuries.

It was reported to police that someone had fallen out of a moving vehicle.

When police arrived, a witness told them she saw a small, black truck in front of her driving south on Warwick Boulevard with furniture in the back. While driving several couches and a man fell out of the truck on the street in front of her.

The truck continued to drive without stopping and the woman had to slam on her brakes to avoid hitting the victim.

The victim, identified as 31-year-old Robert Banfiel, was taken to the hospital in life-threatening condition suffering from injuries to his head, face, arms and legs.
